Tenant question: Log burner in rented property has been condemmed

Short background:

We are a couple with kids 6 & 8 renting from a landlady (and her husband) who we have always had a good relationship with and paid on time (3 years). If anything we are too easy going I guess and I have done alot of permitted work on the property, re-paint, silicone to wet areas etc as I can and its far easier to wait for the landladys husband to ever do anything.

Anyway...

Boiler is playing up and it dawns on us its not been inspected/serviced for the 3 years of our tenancy.

We have been waiting months to have this dealt with (we have heating and hot water but it cuts out randomly and we have been shown how to repressurise it), and with the weather turning have started to use the log burner, however on first use its backed up and smoked the house out.

With landladys permission I get a chimney sweep round (husband was going to do it hisself last year) and he condemns it instantly. There is no return thingy. Basically we have been using this for two winters and sitting next to it with the kids breathing carbon monoxide. The chimney sweep asked me to remove the log burner from the hearth area so he could sign it off as removed.

The little things we have always let slip or done ourselves, this one has made us pretty furious.

What should we do?

Thank you in advance for any advice,

Mr. T. Hunter
