Broken Lease

My new tenants signed a 6 month contract in February 2013. They left 3 days ago giving no notice only to say that they were leaving that day. The letting agent is very nonchalant that they have broken their contract, saying that their old phone number no longer works and that he is unwilling to try and trace them any further. He has said he can pass their work details onto me, and it is up to me to try and claim any losses from them.
As I have never had any contact with the tenants before, is it okay for me to ring their workplace to get some answers in terms of their new address in order to claim any losses? Should my letting agents be helping in this process?

Please any advice would be appreciated.
