Unauthorised Change of Gas/Electric Meters By Utility Company

During the course of their tenancy the tenant changed the utility meters from Credit to Prepay, probably at the insistence of the utility company (Southern Electric) because of unpaid bills.
Now that the tenant has been evicted Southern have advised me that they require around £110. 00 to change the meters back to credit meters. I take the view that as the landlord, Southern did not have my authority to change these two meters in the first place and, as stated previously,probably did so for their own benefit, to ensure that the energy bills were paid.
I am of the opinion that Southern should reinstate the original meters without charge
Is anyone aware of my legal rights here?
