Deposit Transfer Error

Around 14 months ago I decided to hand my notice in and go travelling. A friend was taking over the tenancy and I had stated to the letting agent they could transfer my bond across to the new tenant. The tenancy for me was a nightmare as they took months, 8 in total to fix the central heating. So it was agreed I would be given back a full bond to transfer.

However, they stated they wanted a forwarding address from me, as the transfer could not be completed without one (I still have the emails). I would not provide a forwarding address as I did not want them contacting me anywhere else. I called in and told them that as well. I went travelling within 48 hours not signing any paperwork and still refusing to provide an address.

I returned home 6 weeks ago and noticed I had never been paid the bond back. I called the agency and they told me they transferred the bond to the new tenant. They state nothing needed to be signed as i wrote in an email I was happy for them to do so. However, after the email stating I would sign the bond over I refused to complete the process and never gave the crucial forwarding address they needed. That is how I left it. I assumed wrongly they would deal with the incoming tenant. I contacted that person and they nothing of the bond transfer, had never had any paperwork and only signed a tenancy agreement, paying no bond.

Is this legal? Can they transfer the bond without me signing paperwork or finalising the process with the forwarding address? It was stated in an email as a matter of fact that the process could not be completed without a forwarding address. I simply want to be paid my deposit back by the agency.

Thank you for any help you can give me.

Kind regards,
