Buy-to-let landlords are being encouraged to sign up for a new accreditation scheme run by five of the county’s six district councils.

Although membership is voluntary, those that join the Cumbria Landlord Accreditation Scheme will be subject to “light-touch” inspections.

Other benefits include the option to advertise on the University of Cumbria’s website, a fortnightly e-newsletter, help with fire precautions and energy-efficiency measures, training events, and meetings with guest speakers.

Landlords are invited to attend the launch at the University of Cumbria’s campus in Fusehill Street, Carlisle, at 6.30pm on May 20.

The scheme, run in partnership with the National Landlords Association (NLA), goes live on October 1.

Landlords who are members of existing accreditation schemes, such as those in Eden and Carlisle, will be encouraged to transfer to the new scheme. Copeland is the only district not taking part.

Eden council’s communities director Ruth Atkinson said: “Working with the NLA to deliver the new scheme offers even more benefits for Cumbrian landlords.

“The NLA offers support such as regular legal updates.

“Landlords can opt into a membership package that suits their needs, which can include access to free downloadable tenancy agreements, and other legal forms, as well as a telephone helpline and online library.

“This is just the sort of scheme I would expect good landlords would want to join.”

The number of private rented tenants has grown sharply in the last decade.

Census data shows there were 25,183 private rented tenants in 2011, up from 16,575 in 2001.
