It is illegal for landlords of multiple occupation properties to operate without the correct documentation, and now SHEFFIELD Council has launched a crackdown on rogue landlords who have failed to register for a compulsory licence.

Now the council, which has so far issued 1,650 licenses to landlords of multiple occupation homes, is hunting down landlords who have failed to register for their documents and are therefore operating illegally.
A warning a landlord operating anywhere in the UK would be well advised to heed!
Sheffield Council's cabinet member for housing, regeneration and planning Coun Penny Baker said: "We want all landlords to take their responsibilities seriously. If you are sharing a house with five or more people unrelated to you, then your landlord must have a licence which shows their property is safe to live in.

"We will continue to work with the good landlords, and also now actively pursue rogue landlords who are not fulfilling their responsibilities to tenants."

Michelle Slater, service manager of the private sector housing team at Sheffield Council, said: "We know that there are lots of good landlords in Sheffield who manage their properties well and comply with legal requirements. The hard work must continue, as we concentrate on finding out rogue landlords who are breaking the law.

"We know from our intelligence there are landlords out there that have not come forward through the licensing scheme and we will use the full powers of the Housing Act against those landlords."

The council worked in partnership with Sheffield Students' Landlord Association and Sheffield and District Landlords' Association to sign the city's landlords up.

A licensable property is a dwelling occupied by five or more unrelated people which doesn't form a single household over three or more storeys.

The purpose of licensing is to ensure such properties meet a required set of safety standards and has suitable and sufficient amenities for the tenants.

Anyone with information on landlords renting out multiple occupation properties without the necessary documentation should ring the council's HMO team on 0114 2734680 or email hmo@sheffield.gov.uk with details.
