Landlord & Letting Awards integrity questioned

Each year, the Landlord & Letting Awards takes place in a semi-glitzy venue pouring accolade onto the various companies lucky enough to be nominated in their respective categories. But this years results have prompted some criticism from The Landlord Association - the UK's largest association with more than 37,000 registered members.

The awards, introduced in 2009, has just wrapped up its fourth event with the 'winning' companies celebrating their victories as 'best in category' for the service they provide to landlords and the lettings industry in the UK.

The whole of the UK? Every company? Are there none better than those on the short list?

Whilst I realise there are a number of restrictions to the awards (i.e. you have to nominate your own company) the authenticity of the accolade is somewhat questionable.

The main reason for my angst is that no winner of the event [as far as my research can fathom] has ever been absent from any of their awards ceremonies. It seems it is one thing to put your company up for nomination but you stand no chance of winning should you not pay for a table to attend the event. It could be suggested that getting an award is available at a price.

Furthermore, how can the judges have 'much deliberation' over choosing the winning finalists when their fellow conciliators companies are among them? It could be suggested that this is more 'deliberate' than 'deliberation', especially when 2 of those judges win awards for their respective organisations. Coincidental or instrumental?

Of course, one is not sleighing the event as a whole or the work its organisers do the lettings industry in general – AEP Media Ltd (the events organisers) host some decent events around the UK for landlords. All of which offer a fair playing field for companies and landlords alike to do their thing.

But, if you recommend your company for nomination, surely you want to know that when you win it, you do so with integrity and with the whole industry in assessment. Not because you attend an event and/or are on the judging panel.

It would seem a new award ceremony is required where the whole industry is included and the winners given genuine credit for their efforts - watch this space!
